Acute hospital

Royal North Shore Hospital

BVN · St Leonards, Sydney

Window furnishings for one of NSW's largest acute hospitals, designed by BVN.

The Brief

Royal North Shore has cared for patients at St Leonards since 1902, with origins going back to a cottage hospital founded in 1885. The building Quicksew fitted out is the new acute hospital delivered as the centrepiece of the site's redevelopment.

Part of a $1.2 billion redevelopment, the new 100,000m² acute hospital building at Royal North Shore, one of five major trauma centres in NSW and a teaching hospital, was designed by BVN around a sunlit central 'high street'. It houses one of Australia's largest operating suites, a 60-bed ICU, nine inpatient units, radiation oncology, a mental-health unit and a major emergency department.

Our Solution

Nearly fourteen hundred bedscreens, and the tracking to carry them. Seven hundred and eighty-eight bedscreens at 4.5 × 1.9 metres and six hundred and eleven at 4.0 × 1.9, hung on bedscreen track run right through the wards, plus one hundred and fifty-two IV tracks with trees and carriers. Delivered in staged claims across the build. It is still one of the largest single bedscreen packages we have ever made and installed. Royal North Shore is the largest hospital package we have delivered in Sydney.

The Result

The hospital improves operational efficiency and the experience of patients and staff, with colour used for wayfinding and a sense of wellness. Quicksew's window furnishings manage light and privacy across the wards and consulting spaces.
